As a carpet fitter or floor layer your jobs will range from fitting carpeting and floor tiles in both Commercial and Domestic environments. Each job will depend on the size and shape of the rooms and the type of floor covering required, but most would involve:

• * measuring up floor space and estimating the amount of material needed
• * drawing up a plan to make the best use of materials
• * clearing the work area of furniture and sometimes taking off doors
• * removing old flooring
• * preparing the bare floor by cleaning, levelling and sealing with compound if required
• * taping, heat-sealing, gluing or nailing floor coverings into place, or stretching over spiked grippers in the case of carpeting
• * spraying or waxing the floor covering to give it a protective coating
• * replacing furniture and re-hanging doors.

As a fitter, you would normally work as part of a small committed team and in most cases Previous experience would be preferential but not essential. You will need to be able to work on your own initiave and to a consistantly high standard. You must also have good communication skills.
